The Great Platform Unification Approaches

Jason Schreier, a prominent gaming journalist, has shared his prediction about the gaming landscape in 2025, suggesting a clear decline in platform-exclusive games. Schreier emphasized how the trend of focusing on exclusives is fading as companies like Square Enix are shifting towards multi-platform strategies. Following its exclusive release for PlayStation 5, the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will soon be available on PC, with more ports likely to follow. Even major console manufacturers, Sony and Microsoft, are embracing this shift by launching their titles on competing platforms—Spider-Man 2 found its way onto PC, while Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is now available on PlayStation 5. He highlighted how high production costs and the slow growth of console audiences make exclusivity less viable, with missing out on platforms like Steam leading to significant market share loss. As a result, Schreier predicts Xbox will become entirely multi-platform this year, with PlayStation not far behind. The only probable exception might be Nintendo, but the future remains uncertain for how long they will resist this trend.
